Kenya’s healthcare system has changed significantly since the introduction of the Social Health Authority (SHA). SHA replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in October 2024.
Today, SHA manages healthcare financing under Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage programme. Therefore, understanding how SHA works can help you protect yourself and your family.
What Is SHA?
The Social Health Authority manages healthcare financing for Kenyans and eligible residents. It operates through different funds designed to support various healthcare needs.
The system covers primary healthcare, hospital treatment and emergency medical services. As a result, members can access healthcare across different levels of the health system.

How Much SHA Members Pay
SHA contributions depend on your employment and household circumstances. For formal employees, contributions are based on 2.75% of gross monthly salary. The applicable minimum contribution is KSh300 per month.
Meanwhile, informal-sector households undergo an income and means assessment. Their assessed contribution can therefore vary depending on household circumstances. The government can also support vulnerable households through subsidised healthcare contributions.

How Do You Pay SHA Through M-Pesa?
Members making manual payments can use the designated SHA payment channels. The commonly used SHA PayBill is 200222. You should confirm your assessed contribution before making any payment.
Then, use your National ID details as required by the payment system. Always verify payment details through official SHA channels before sending money. This step helps prevent mistakes and possible fraud.
SHA Cover
SHA provides access to a broad range of healthcare services. These include primary healthcare, outpatient treatment and hospital admissions.
The programme also supports maternity care and selected specialised procedures. Furthermore, members can access services for chronic and critical illnesses.
Emergency healthcare also forms part of the broader SHA healthcare framework. However, coverage depends on the applicable benefit package and healthcare facility.
Why Should Kenyans Register?
SHA registration connects households to Kenya’s new healthcare financing system. It can also reduce the financial burden caused by unexpected medical expenses. However, registration alone does not mean every treatment is automatically free.
Members should understand their benefits before seeking specialized treatment. Therefore, keep your information updated and confirm your coverage when necessary.
